PURPOSE AND FUNCTION
Creating the book ‘LYST – An Immersive Dining Experience’ is an attempt to capture the essence of one of the most ambitious restaurant projects in Scandinavia, Restaurant LYST at Fjordenhus in Vejle.
DIFFERENCE
The book ‘LYST – An Immersive Dining Experience’ will – as will the restaurant experience – deliver an artistic take on communicating gastronomy and nature in a different and unprecedented way. Rich in pictures, sketches and texts it tells us the story of the creation and application of the radical ideas that lead to a restaurant build by Olafur Eliasson and German architect Sebastian Behmann in the middle of Vejle Fjord. The book tells us about the three pillars on which the restaurant rests: Nature, Gastronomy, and Art and it shares the extensive effort put into the creation of a unique, un-compromising experience that changes according to the flux of nature. Accompanied by an LP that allows the reader to replicate the auditive, bespoke soundtrack of the restaurant, the book takes us through the complete dining experience from the local foragers who supply LYST with fresh, seasonal ingredients to the creative, gastronomic concept and the restaurant team. From the meticulous bespoke design of interior, uniforms, cutlery and tableware to appetizing examples of the menu – each page an ode to the pleasing of the senses. Initiated by Norwegian Erlend Høyersten, director of the internationally acclaimed art museum AROS, ‘LYST – An Immersive Dining Experience’ tries to capture, embody and communicate the holistic experience and the interplay of nature, gastronomy, design, architecture and people and how these components together make Restaurant LYST an extraordinary experience.
DOCUMENTATION
Spanning almost 400 pages, the book design is as ambitious and un-compromising as the design of the restaurant experience itself. The creative ambition is to convey as many dimensions of the restaurant experience in the publication as possible including tactile, visual and even auditive elements while also respecting the vision of sustainable production that is a core to the daily operations of Restaurant LYST. The book is printed at Narayana Press, one of the most prestigious printing facilities and within the 100-mile radius that the restaurant also complies with when it comes to the gathering of ingredients. The book is printed Arctic Volume White 170 gr. to ensure the best possible visual print and representation of text and photo – photos of which 80% has been shot on different analogue cameras specifically chosen for the motives to get photos that are as natural and tactile as possible. The book has been bound in four different shades of red and terracotta to match the colour palette of the bespoke bricks used for the Fjordenhus building. This is repeated on the edges of the book, the red tailband and the deep red fly leaf that collectively elongates the colour experience from the book exterior and emphasise the truly immersive experience. The applied typographies are A Gothic, AA Gothic and Larish Alte – all designed by acknowledged Dutch type designer Radim Pesko. AA Gothic is sans serif and has a distinctive detail and personality and is chosen to represent both the grandness and the quirky details of the Olafur Eliasson and Sebastian Behmann architecture. Larish Alte on the other hand, is a serif font inspired by 1900 century publications and anchors the content to history and classical literature. The embossing on the front is made with silver to imitate the reflections of the water surface that surrounds Fjordenhus – reflections that are also present in the interior design of Restaurant LYST. The book is bound with thread sewing, has a rounded back with a Skivertex cover that refers to old archive binding and adds robustness and functionality to the book. The print and production are fully sustainably certified with FSC and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, all transportation has been by electric cars and the plastic wrapping that protects the book is fully recyclable. Whether you are a potential or former guest at Restaurant LYST, the book conveys to you the un-compromising, immersive experience of Restaurant LYST and as such it meets the contemporary demands of gastronomical connoisseurs. Available in retail and on the restaurant web shop for only a week, the book is already sold nationally and internationally as far as Europe, Japan, and the States.
