Name The Bias explores the serious impact of name-based discrimination in hiring across the UK. British-Bangladeshi poet Yasmin Ali brings new life to Shakespeare’s “What’s in a name?” through spoken word, showing how names hold culture, identity, and personal history—but can also unfairly limit opportunities.
The black-and-white film uses strong symbolism – a bus that only lets certain passengers board, leaving others stuck and isolated. This represents how people with ethnically diverse names are often excluded or held back because of their ethnicity, despite being equally qualified.
The film’s poetic storytelling is paired with simple yet powerful visuals. Its stripped-back setting ensures the words take center stage, without unnecessary distractions in production. The bleak world, shot in a 4:3 format, and the bus stop acting as a “box” in which people are stuck all work together to turn the abstract into a message that’s easy to understand.
The ultimate goal of the project is to push for mandatory reporting on ethnicity pay gaps in the UK — just as it’s already required for gender pay gaps.
