The Client
Munio is a Danish based design brand with a commitment to high quality in design as well as craftsmanship and an ambition towards promoting sustainable forestry on an international platform. Home accessories from Munio are produced exclusively from FSC-certified wood under the Canopy Wood™ Code of Conduct.
Munio means I defend in Latin and this is the principal idea behind the Munio range: a commitment to preserving the planet’s endangered rainforests through beautiful, high quality home accessories. The design philosophy takes its inspiration in clean and simple lines, and contemporary interpretations of classical forms.
Munio uses established designer profiles as well as up-and-coming designers to create new collections. The first collection is designed by Helena Rohner, widely considered one of the strongest profiles on the contemporary European design scene, creating products and jewellery for Paul Smith and Georg Jensen among others.
The Challenge
Create packaging in 10 different sizes using environmentally friendly materials. The packaging should have a classic look to match the products and the customer should want to keep the packaging after unpacking the product. To avoid shipping empty boxes, the packaging should be able to be shipped flat and easily be assembled where the products are packed. To match the expression of each collection the packaging should have an exchangeable element so each collection can have its own characteristic.
The solution
The packaging design is inspired by book casings and the boxes are bound similar to books. They are lined with an uncoated FSC-certified paper quality, black on the inside and white on the outside. The core is a sturdy cardboard material made from post consumer waste which creates a rigid construction that allows customers to keep the packaging for other purposes and which also work as display modules in the shops.
The boxes close with concealed magnets in the lid and a semitransparent sleeve with screen printed graphics surrounds the box. The print is made with environmentally friendly vegetable oil based inks. The sleeve design can vary depending on the expression of each collection while the box itself will remain neutral.
To avoid shipping empty boxes to where the products are packed, making the process more enivironmental friendly and cost efficient, a folding concept was created where the boxes are flat when shipped. With a simple movement, the inside corners are raised and stick together with a strong double adhesive.
Inside every box the products are wrapped in Fair Trade produced organic cotton protective bags that come in three sizes depending on the size of the product. Quality bags which again can be used for other purposes after the products are unpacked.
