Higashiosaka City, known for having the highest density of small-to-medium sized producers in Japan, is also known for it’s culture of masterful cooperation - utilising their network of specialists create almost any product from clamps to robots.

Working with Higashiosaka City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Kindai University, we created a connected ‘smart typeface’ that changes depending on the context of the letters.

The Higashiosaka typeface highlights the interconnectedness of the city - expressing the story of the city’s heritage, whichever touchpoint found.

Created with Contextual Alternates in OpenType, this typeface explores automatic choosing of glyph alternates with reference to an adjacent character. Truly smart, truly unique.
