THE PREMISE
For the past year and a half, Designmuseum Denmark has been closed to the public due to large scale renovations, with a reopening scheduled in June 2022. During this hiatus, they were faced with an important challenge: how to keep the museum experience alive, while offering a glimpse to the upcoming exhibition “The Future is Present”. Our answer: using the glass montres that tower in the front courtyard of the museum to engage visitors in a new way, inviting them to reflect upon the future.
THE IDEA
Focusing on the chosen themes for the upcoming exhibition, we created abstract stories around what it might feel like to be a HUMAN, to live in SOCIETY and to engage with our PLANET in the near future. These stories were made into tangible experiences within 3 of the montres.
THE EXECUTION
Normally used to showcase design objects from around the world, we decided to use the montres in a completely new and engaging way. The exterior of each glass box is dressed in a graphic wrap with peep hole cutouts that invite the viewer to look inside. When peeking through these cutouts, the interior reveals a contemplative question along with simple tactile elements that further illustrate the dilemma.
To fully connect the three montres, we imagined a visual language around possible futures that is both hard and soft, geometric and organic, abstract and lifelike. Visual themes revolve around spheres and light, in order to help illustrate complex concepts such as humanity, the cosmos, technology and infinite possibilities -- all this through the lens of simplicity, leaving room for interpretation and reflection.
THE THEMES
Montre 01: HUMAN -- Do all future humans have a mother?
Montre 1 has visitors reflecting on what it even means to be ‘a human’ in the future. In a world of lab grown babies, new family structures, and human-like relationships to robots, digital assistants and virtual friends; does everyone actually have a mother and what does it mean to be one?
Montre 02: SOCIETY -- Who knows you better, big data or your loved ones?
Who controls your life? Are your decisions really yours? In a society of growing tech, surveillance and global companies fighting for your data, does Algorithm equal God? And more to the point, does your phone, or even your smart fridge, actually know you better than your boyfriend or girlfriend?
Montre 03: PLANET -- Should we stay or should we go?
It’s the discussion on everyone’s lips. Should we travel to outer space exploring new options for planets to live on, or should we stay and fight for the one we've got? Humankind has always been curious by nature and we keep evolving – but we are also home-bound beings looking for security. Which option will win out?

How will you engage with possible futures?
