PROBLEM:
Ethnic minority professionals in the UK face systemic bias in hiring and pay, needing to submit 60% more applications than white applicants to get an interview. Unlike gender pay gaps, ethnicity pay gap reporting remains optional, allowing disparities to persist unchecked.
SOLUTION:
On Ethnicity Pay Gap Day in the UK, People Like Us launched #NameTheBias, a campaign exposing name bias in hiring. A powerful spoken-word piece asked: “What’s in a name?” - expressed across different mediums including film, digitial, social, OOH and live performance - highlighting how ethnic names impact job prospects. The initiative sparked debate in Parliament and urged the Government to set a timeline for mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting.
RESULTS:
•17 million DKK earned media
•155 million combined audience reach
•5 ministerial questions tabled in UK Parliament
•32+ press features: including The Times, The Sun, Yahoo News!, LinkedIn Global News
•10,000+ LinkedIn engagements, with professionals sharing personal stories
•Featured by Oxford University in its study on name bias
•Thousands engaged in direct advocacy, writing to MPs to demand change
